Who is this for? People don’t need to live in a hotel next to their door. You can’t just book a flight and fly there within 3 days. So this is for those who already book those hotels so that they can cancel existing booking and use the points?

    Great point confused!
I guess they are for day-trips that you might want to extend.
The break on points is not that great anyways. Never as good as pointbreaks, with no advanced warning.
    sucks.

I have been Platinum since 2001 and a member since 1988. It would be impossible to book a flight ( on points) on short notice! Is priorityclub working with the airlines to screw us too!

This great new offer is for spontaneous people like me. So far this year, I’ve stayed at a Holiday Inn about 50 nights, mostly booked on the day, sometimes only hours before I check in. But I’ve only used 5 Point Breaks. I’m hoping that this offer will give me more variety than Points Breaks does so that the majority of my stays are at a better rate.

Looking at it from the hotel’s point of view, Point Breaks is a pretty blunt instrument — the decision to offer Point Breaks is taken way ahead of them being used, and a lot can change in that time. Any hotel with significant numbers of unsold rooms a week or two ahead can offer them as Last Minute Rewards and people like me will make use of them. Everybody wins!

I suspect Eric is someone from Priority Club. So which ‘Nice Destination’ did you fly to this weekend? Best city in the list is Chicago airport. You’ve been watching lots of flights take off? Why don’t you present evidence here that you’ve visited one of destinations this weekend huh?

As for hotels’ point of view, those hotels who offer Point Breaks are already those who anticipate low capacity during that season – that’s why they are not offering 90% of all IHG hotels or even 50% of all IHG hotels in Point Breaks.

Another ‘hotels’ point of view’ for this last minute weekend – since it was offered only 5 days advance, it’s a lot easier for hotels to anticipate vacancy. Therefore, more hotels should come on list.

Since this is such a bad offer, the only way to make it up is to offer more hotels worldwide at nearly every location, including those expensive cities where IC required 40,000 points and the hotels that are rarely on Point Breaks. Hotels that can not prove over 90% booking rate on that weekend should come on list – every weekend. Plus, every hotel should come on list at least once every quarter regardless booking rate.

Well, I’m not from Priority Club, I’m just a Platinum member in the UK. My work running projects takes me all over the place and I spend a lot of time staying in hotels. As I’m in the UK and the Point Breaks list has dried up for me, I had to pay real money for my stay this weekend — I’m looking forward to seeing LMR over here sometime soon!

Will the new list be released today at all? Or are they done with the last minute rewards experiment?

I think the Last Minute award should be good if it compliment Point Break instead of replace it. The drawback of Point Break is that the locations are limited. If Last Minute Award can offer more locations and worldwide, not just USA, then it should be good.

To stand in hotels’ shoes, Last Minute Award will allow hotels to make money from breakfasts and other restaurants by offering free rooms. This is especially true for hotels that have many restaurants and especially true for resort hotels that also offer spa. The room are vacant anyway, why not use them to make money from restaurants and spas?

In addition, over the last several years, all veteran members know that while some holiday inns and some cities have been on list more than twice, some hotels and some cities are never on PointBreak list. This is not fair to those hotels that are on the list. Note that all hotels within IHG group play the game as a team. Say that holiday inn in Christchurch already appear twice, IC Paris or IC Hong Kong was never on list.

Say that members who visit Paris don’t think twice when deciding whether IC Paris or Hyatt, whether IC Istanbul or Ritz, since they want to accumulate points. They use those points to stay in those holiday inns that are on pointbreak list. This means holiday inn are picking up tab for IC.

For the hotels, they don’t give out many rooms, they just need to give out rooms when they expect vacancy. It’s not like they need to give out 100 rooms over a weekend. 10 or 20 rooms depending on expected vacancy will just be fine. However, the Last Minute Award should be just 5000 points and not 15,000 points, otherwise, they will be similar to no award at all.

To get all this up and running, IHG should have an IT system that allows the hotels to sign up anytime they want. So that they can put rooms on Monday and increase or decrease number of rooms on Thursday or Wendesday depending how the rooms fill up or how they see more rooms available.
